🕵️‍ Searching for Dog Body Language Clues

To figure out what your dog is telling you, you’ll need to look for clues. We find clues in these dog body parts:

  • Mouth 👄
  • Eyes 👀
  • Posture🐕
  • Tail 🐩
  • Ears👂
  • Sounds 🗣️

Find the icon for each clue in every section to get an idea of what to look out for.

😄 When Dogs Are Happy

These are the clues your pup is in great mood: 🔎

  • 🐩 Loose, wiggly, wagging tail
  • 👀 Soft eyes, not staring
  • 👂Ears in a normal position (different for different dogs)
  • 👄 Open mouth, maybe panting
  • 🐕 Relaxed body. Bouncy, wiggly walk or play bows (front legs stretched, bum in the air)
  • 🗣 Usually quiet, but may bark playfully

😨 When Dogs Are Nervous or Scared

Even the toughest-looking dog can feel scared sometimes. Watch out for these clues: 🔎

  • 🐩 Low tail tucked between their legs
  • 👂 Ears flat or pulled back
  • 👄 Licking lips a lot or yawning when not sleepy
  • 👀 Whale eyes and avoiding eye contact
  • 🗣️ Whining or high pitched bark
  • 🐕 Crouching, shaking backing away, or hiding behind something

This means: “I’m nervous. I want some space.”

✅ What to do: Stay calm, give them space, and let an adult help.

😠 When Dogs Are Angry or Want to Be Left Alone

If a dog is upset, you really need to give them space. Here are some clues to look for: 🔎

  • 🐕 Stiff, frozen body (like a statue)
  • 🐩 Tail stiff and straight (up or down)
  • 🗣️ Growling, barking
  • 👄 Showing teeth, snarling
  • 👂 Ears pointed straight up or forward
  • 👀 Hard staring or looking sideways with “whale eyes” (white part of eye showing)

This means: “Back off. I don’t like this.”

🚫 Do not pet or get close to a dog showing these signs. Tell an adult right away.

🤔 What’s “Whale Eye”?

🐳 Whale eye has nothing to do with whales.

It’s when a dog turns their head but keeps their eyes looking at you. It looks like the dog is giving you the side eye. 👀

The easiest way to tell is that you’ll see the white part of your dog’s eyes.

Whale eye usually means the dog is feeling uncomfortable or worried, so when you see it, give your dog some space.

This dog has whale eye, meaning you can see the white part of a dog's eye. It is an important part of dog body language, and means a dog is nervous or upset.

🐶 Every Dog’s Body Language Is Different!

Some dogs wag their tails when they’re nervous. Some don’t have tails! Others bark when they’re excited.

That’s why it’s super important to look at the whole body, not just one part.

The best way to know whether a dog is happy is by asking them if they want to play or be pet.

Pat your leg and call the dog’s name. If they stay away, they probably don’t feel like hanging out right now.

Always ask a grown-up before petting a dog you don’t know.
