Training your dog in public places

Not all dogs like going everywhere with their family. It can be stressful or frustrating to be in an unfamiliar space surrounded by new people and dogs.

If your dog doesn’t have fun in public, it’s ok to leave them at home. You can take them for short practice adventures and build up to bigger ones.

Some dogs love public places a bit too much. They become over-excited in public and forget their manners.

For these pups, shorter, structured activities can help keep things fun for people. Try to leave a space before your dog starts doing anything you don’t like.

  • High quality treats – like real meat or a peanut butter squeeze tube
  • Walking leash – I like to use a cross-body leash so I can keep my hands free
  • Walking harness – Using a front-clip harness or head collar can protect your dog’s neck while preventing some pulling
  • Travel water bowl – My dog has his own water bottle with a bowl so he can stay hydrated on the go
